Malaysia Open: Wei Chong-Kai Wun, Yew Sin-Ee Yi among 4 pairs into last eight

Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi turned in a sizzling performance to reach the Malaysia Open quarter-finals, and they were joined by two other Malaysian pairs on another good day at the Axiata Arena.

Man-Tee needed only 31-minutes to beat Chinese Taipei’s Lee Jhe-Huei-Yang Po-hsuan 21-15, 21-13 in a display of confidence and composure.

Man was excellent in his positioning to intercept their opponents returns, while Tee’s defence stood out when it mattered.

The Malaysian national pair will play French brothers Christo Popov-Toma Junior Popov in the last eight.

Ong-Teo also impressed as they battled hard to secure a fine 23-21, 16-21, 21-18 success over South Korean scratch pairing of Kang Min-hyuk-Jin Yong.

The South Koreans who are playing in their first tournament together pushed the Malaysians to the wire, but Ong-Teo preserved to lift the crowd at the Axiata Arena.

The professional pair will play India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty in the last eight.

In the mixed doubles, Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai both booked their berths in comfortable fashion.

Chen-Toh were again imperious to beat their Chinese Taipei opponents in straight games 21-8, 21-14, just like they did in the first round.

The third seeds will face Japanese pair Hiroki Midorikawa-Natsu Saito for a place in the semi-finals.

Goh-Lai also won in straight games, beating India’s Satish Karunarakarn-Aadya Variyath 21-10, 21-17.

The fourth seeds will face Chinese pair Cheng Xing-Zhang Chi next.

Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, meanwhile, failed to advance after they suffered a straight game 14-21, 18-21 defeat against Chinese Taipei twins Lee Fang-chih-Lee Fang-jen.

Tan Wee Kiong-Nur Azriyn also suffered a straight game 15-21, 15-21 defeat against India’s Rankireddy-Shetty.
