It proved a much better outing for the Malaysian contingent at the ongoing Malaysia Open, after three pairs that included Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi checked into the second round on Wednesday.

Ong-Teo served up the biggest win of the lot, after the world number 24 pair came from a game down to beat fourth seeded Indonesians Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto 15-21, 21-17, 21-13.

Ong-Teo have always relied on their defence as one of their weapons, and they used it to great effect once again to defy their world number four opponents in the second and third game.

The professional pair will now go on to face South Korea’s scratch pairing of Kang Min-hyuk-Jin-yong in the second round on Thursday.

Chia-Soh, surprisingly, also needed three games to beat American pair Chen Zhin Yi-Presley Smith 21-15, 16-21, 21-10.

The Paris Olympics bronze medalists were clearly not at their best against their unfancied opponents, but were at least dominant in the deciding game to come through.

Chia-Soh will face a Chinese Taipei pair in the last year.

In the mixed doubles, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai brushed aside another American pair.

Smith was on double duty as he partnered Jennie Gai against the Malaysians, but Goh-Lai came away with a comfortable 21-15, 21-19 victory.

The husband-wife combination, who won last year’s Malaysia Masters, will face an Indian pair for a place in the quarter-finals.

The rest of the Malaysians who saw action earlier in the day suffered defeats.

They included Junaidi Arif-Yap Roy King (men’s doubles), Goh Jin Wei (women’s singles) and Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting (women’s doubles).

But day two proved a much better outing than on Tuesday where Leong Jun Hao, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin, Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah, Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien, Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin, Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing and Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing all lost.
